Russell Baker was such a good writer: he puts just about every current NY Times columnist to shame. His memoir, “Growing Up,” was a terrific read and it definitely deserved the Pulitzer he got. What a smart, nice, unpretentious human being.

I must admit that I don’t understand the “Why Dick Cheney votes for Democrats” line, I have to admit. I was the Democratic candidate for Congress in Wyoming last November, and I can assure you that he didn’t vote for me. http://elections.nytimes.com/2014/wyoming-elections

However, I am shocked because when I read Ryan’s Stranger piece, it seemed pretty spot-on to me and utterly uncontroversial. Only today did I discover the “shitstorm” it produced. The article you link to was one I had to skim, and having to read 500 pages of that person’s writing would be torture for me, too. Why bother outing himself as inept and naive when no one else but the few people in his class might have recognized him from Ryan’s article? This is probably the most attention he’ll ever get as a writer, I suppose.

Less is more! My personal tick…
Your observation on the outed MFA student’s article is pretty much exactly what I was getting at. Cheney? Well, it’s all antiwar words and art-like stuff here all the time so, just my way of redirecting the MFA outrage to real world–never ending global war. Sort of? : )

      Thanks for the comments Richard,

Baker was a closet etymologist. That’s a secret by the by.
