The Vigilant Lens 
This is the most horrifying thing I have heard in a while. To think that a man would beat and kick a woman just makes me ill. The fact that she is a service member makes it even worse. I would have loved to have read that she beat the crap out of him, and would have loved even more to have read that someone, anyone in the crowd had stepped forward and stopped it.
This is a very sad testimony to our culture.

i found your blog post by googling this guys name after reading about this incident on cnn. i am very angry at the way Ms. Hill was treated and think west should be prosecuted quickly and, based on what i know of the case, he should be punished severely. as described this, to me is exactly why the hate crime exists. i understand your anger (i feel it too) but just because someone has a different political perspective (e.g., watch glenn beck, don’t support the president’s ideas on things like healthcare reform) that doesn’t mean they should be lumped in with this cretin.

I can appreciate many people do not support Obama on health care, but the “conversation” against this so called health care bill…has rarely been about whats actually in the bill. Glenn Beck and many others, are indeed part of the reason, we are talking about skin color and not say…Medicare for all.

hey- we have many a spool -user here in ga. too! in my younger years, i used them as well. great to put plants on, out in the yard. concerning frank’s comment- i do think it is not too much of a stretch to lump mr. west in with the glenn beck/ fox news watchers of the world. the goal of these right wing talk show hosts is to spread the culture of hate. they may wrap it up in a deceptive package, by using such benign words and phrases as” we are patriots, we love our country, liberals are unamerican etc.” but their true message is meant to stir up hate for liberals, those who want health care reform, anyone who supports obama. their message is meant to divide, incite hate and social uprising against anyone who doesnt subscribe to their views. this doesnt seem too far from the likes of our mr. west. in fact, he appears to be the poster child for fox network. just my view. i respect that frank doesnt agree,and i appreciate the civil manner in which he mentioned it in his blog.

That is exactly what has been missing for some time now…we do not have to agree on everything. But when those who have access to millions of dry, sponge like brains…and all they can spew is hate and disinformation? It only helps their paychecks, and those who pay them. If ya know what I mean.

I am no Obama apologist, in fact I disagree with much of what he is doing…and not doing. But the color of his skin has absolutely, positively nothing to do with anything.

as a white man from the south, i look at his face and feel a uneasy familiarity. i suspect he comes from a long line of ignorant and mean people. while on my little google research project i came across a message board chain from folks that apparently KNOW him and his family and apparently he has a history of bullying behavior and fighting within their community. they also state he has two children and a wife. imagine being them. scary.

Kind of what I figured. He did not just happen upon this woman and her child and decide to beat her for being black. He was comfortable in his surroundings, he felt no one would intervene and most telling, he felt he had the right to do what he did.
I won’t pretend to know what he taught his children…but I can’t imagine it has anything to do with all people being equal, or Obama not being an Islamic terrorist from Hawaii by way of Kenya.
But yes, I’m sure he has created quite the nightmare for his family…

Back to the beginning of the blog – why did no one else help this woman being attacked? Fear is part of the answer, another piece is the expectation that someone else would do something. We have become a society of fear and inaction. We believe problems will always be taken care of by someone else. Sure this moron will be prosecuted and due to all the attention this is getting, he will likely get the worst whatever legal system in his area will allow.
Step back folks, be afraid, and wait for the authorities to take care of all of our problems. Somewhere along the way we forgot authority as an extension of law is our voice. We are lost and unable to find common ground, or are unwilling to work for the greater good.
