What Change
February 24, 2009
Tired of watching the train wreck that is us? Weary of hoping for change that never comes?
Then watch this video. It will only take five minutes of your day or your night. You will see that nothing ever really changes, and any change that should, would or could happen…will have to come, from “us.”
The Walrus was right.

Yes, true… but…
By only focusing on personal attitudes of peace, and peaceful actions there is a very real risk (risk? not really… it is an actuality) that systems of structural violence remain in place.
One may well feel comfortable, safe and happy living in a little community somewhere, eating organic veggies and sitting zazen all day – but at whose expense? Who made the zafu? Who made the clothes? What opportunities are the kids afforded that other kids (possibly browner, possibly living far away) don’t get? Who built the house and the car and who takes care of the kids? What runs the car and the lights and how was it obtained? Where did the chocolate in your mocha come from? The gold in your ring?
etc etc etc…
There’s nothing peaceful, really, in living a nice quiet life of contemplation and quiet peaceful retreat.
But it sure is easy to fool yourself into thinking it is so.
(the above comment is not directed at any one person in particular, but if it makes someone uncomfortable they might want to think about why that is so.)

Indeed.
But being most humans could give a shit, I just try to point out the little things. Like, get off the couch, turn off the TV…stop making meth.
In other words, the hundred’s of millions of humans (and 395 zazen sitters) that could actually make a difference, make changes, will not. We never have and I’m not so sure we ever will.
Getting a few thousand off their couches and buying more organic, shade grown tea, picked by children who make a fair wage…may be all we can handle. Hence, John Lennon’s easy to digest message.
Thanks Ginger.
